The Churchill Arms on the border from London's Notting Hill to South Kensington is my second favourite pub in London and my favourite Thai restaurant, when it comes to value for money eating in London.
The pub is very lovingly decorated and the Thai restaurant in the back of the pub looks more like a small greenhouse. It's all very cosy and comfortable there. I never missed going there when in London.
Thaied to yumminess
The Churchill Arms Pub was built in 1750. In the 1800s Winston Churchill's grandparents were regulars there. After WW2 the name of the pub was changed in to Churchill Arms.
The Churchill Arms was the first pub in the UK to serve Thai food. Of course there is traditional pub food, too, in the front area like the Sunday roast on weekends.
The cosy Thai restaurant in the back of the pub is very popular in the neighbourhood. At noon many people come here for business lunch. You are advised to arrive early at noon to catch a seat. The later it gets, the more difficult it will be to get a table for you - especially from the middle to the end of the week. In the evening it's even more difficult to book a table..but it's all worth it! The Thai food is simple, authentic and great. If a dish is marked as hot, e. g. the famous jungle curry, it is actually hot!
Vegetarians and vegans will always find something yummy, indeed. If wished, meat dishes can be prepared as vegetarian or even vegan dishes, too.
The Churchill Arms offers great and matching wines by the glass like Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel rosé or a Pinot Noir. My highlight is an African Viognier sold by the bottle only. And, of course, a great selection of beers - bottled or on draught - are available as well as soft drinks.
This small restaurant beats any expensive Thai in money for value - believe me!
Some impressions and history of this old pub is following - presented by the owner himself.
Welcome to the jungle!
What makes the Churchill Arms so outstanding is not just the food, the drinks and its history. It's the decoration, too. This is a really green pub. On the outside as well as on the inside. This pub even won the Chelsea Flower Show once...but see yourself:
How to get to the Churchill Arms Pub
You will find this pub best, if you go to Notting Hill Gate tube station, look for the Waterstones bookshop, go just around the corner and walk up Kensington Church Street direction South Ken. Stay on the right side of the street and you cannot miss it!
The only flaw I see with this pub is, they send you your birthday wishes over a fortnight before your actual birthday. All the rest is just perfect!
